  • "NO FRIZZ" - Impossible or Achievable?

Lately, there seems to be a curly hair movement suggesting that the phrase “No Frizz” is some kind of mythical idea. Some curly hair influencers have even gone so far as to personify "No frizz" as an imaginary character that is impossible to ever find or achieve. They believe we should gladly accept flyaways and that it is mentally unhealthy to try to achieve a frizz free look. On the other end of the spectrum, for people who are not part of that movement, the phrase “No Frizz” is a motivating idea which prompts them to create immaculate hairstyles without even one misaligned strand. They believe that any frizz implies laziness or lack of care about one's appearance. But what is frizz? Does frizz really need to be a four-letter word? And is there a way to find a compromise between different curly hair belief systems? The word “Frizzy” is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “not smooth or neat, because individual hair shafts are variably wavy and do not align together”. Naturally curly hair is generally frizzier than straight hair because natural oils on a curly haired person's scalp can't travel down the hair shaft as easily. As a result, frizz is often more noticeable in textured hair. Also, any damage in hair strands makes it easier for internal moisture to exit, leaving the hair drier than it should be regardless of hair being straight or curly. In addition, there are some secret external factors which contribute to frizzy hair that are not commonly known such as: which ingredients to avoid in high humidity, heat styling, using harsh products, not using enough product, diluting products too much, not using enough hold, washing too often, and towel drying your hair. It is normal and expected for curly textured hair to have a little frizz. According to Curly Hair Specialist Athena Padilla, "if you want to tame, reduce, and manage frizzy hair, this IS possible with the right hair routine, effort, and products”. If you look on Athena's Website Homepage/How to Begin, you will see her original definition of frizz as a play on words which put frizz into a mentally healthy perspective. She compared dealing with frizzy hair to any other challenge in life, such as stress or trials. She explained her original definition of frizz by saying, "Healthy FRIZZ is beautiful and it’s not only in the eye of the beholder, it really doesn’t have anything wrong with it. It’s the unhealthy frizz that we want to remove and manage. Leave the worrying out. Believe in your inner beauty, and the true beauty of others. That’s how to take the FRIZZ out of life! Remember, you are a #10 inside and out.” If we understand that people were afraid of the word frizz in the past and solely had a goal to remove frizz then we can grow from that; we can remind people that healthy frizz, natural curl texture, or flyaway strands of hair have nothing wrong with them and should be embraced as a part of life. We stand by this healthy minded movement to understand frizz as it really is, and that it’s possible to give hair what it needs without feeling exhausted mentally or physically. A little hard work never hurt anyone. This viewpoint on frizz evolves gracefully as the world's curly hair philosophies change from a negative to a positive perspective. Wanting to now embrace frizz more fully all while achieving our hair goals and life dreams is still everyone's personal choice. And definitely keep in mind that no matter what your hair looks like, you truly are beautiful. As you strive to reduce frizz or damage in your hair, we can support you through Personal Hair Coaching, Forums, Learning Charts on Facebook, Videos, Custom Natural products, and Hair Routine Tips! Empathetically, just as it’s okay to encourage and support someone who wants to be the next president for example, it's not our place to discourage or un-inspire them from what they truly want. Managing frizz can be a way of life that is kept in balance as we understand our limits and our hair’s condition. For instance, Athena may personally get frizz-free curls for a 1-hour photo shoot (because that is an art form some people love to achieve) - but the next day while chasing her kids around she’ll throw her hair into a messy bun and that's just as incredibly beautiful. Let’s start a NEW movement! No Frizz 10 Naturals was chosen as a company name to be readily recognizable to those looking to reduce frizz in their curly hair. However, our products are designed for all hair types, and we want to be enticing to all consumers, whether they have straight, wavy, OR curly hair. We are also developing a natural skincare line, and we want everyone to know that our products are for all your skin needs. With that in mind, and to find a compromise between different curly hair belief systems, we are transitioning from being referred to as “No Frizz 10 Naturals” to “NF10 Naturals”. The acronym NF10 can have many different personal meanings from "No Frizz - You're a 10" to "Never Failing", to "Naturally Fetching", or a personal favorite, "Notably Fabulous Skin & Hair Care – You’re a 10.” What does NF10 mean to you personally and what is your curly hair philosophy on life? Tell us in our POLLS/FORUM HERE. Whatever it is, we hope that you will think of us and enjoy using the products we offer to fit all your hair and skincare needs! • Clarifying vs Detoxing Your Hair

There are so many articles and advertisements about clarifying and detoxing your hair. But, what’s the difference? Why do we even need to worry about that? I figured it’s as good a time as any to get this sorted out along with the why's and how's about clarifying vs. detoxing out hair. It was CRAZY HAIR DAY and now you really need to get off all that product BUILD-UP! DO I EVEN NEED TO CLARIFY OR DETOX MY HAIR? Maybe...probably. First, you need to determine if you have build-up in your hair. But, honestly, if you haven’t done a detox in a while, you probably need to do one pronto! Some products (not mine!) contain ingredients such as silicone, to help reduce frizz and increase shine. However, these products are not water-soluble and do not absorb into your hair. Rather they sit on the hair and depending on your routine, these products may not be removed at each wash and can continue to build up over time. Also, mineral deposits can be build up from hard water. For those of us who co-wash only, can have build up of oils, etc. that need a good clarifying shampoo or detox to cleanse that excess debris away. So, what does that build up look like? If your hair looks dull and doesn’t have that shine anymore or feels dry to the touch, it probably has build up. If your hair is limp and your curls just aren’t holding like they used to, it might be build up (or it might also be a moisture/protein issue...see my blog for more information on the Wet Stretch Test and find out what your hair needs.) Frizzy Dull hair NOW, THE SIMILARITIES In a lot of ways, clarifying and detoxing your hair do the same thing. They both remove excess or unwanted minerals (ie, hard water deposits), oil, and residue buildup. How they differ is largely in the ingredients and how the ingredients interact with your hair. Detox products and techniques often use natural products to remove unwanted material from your hair. Detox products may also include deep conditioners such as shea, moisturizing oils, and bentonite clay. On the other hand, clarifying products and techniques typically use synthetic ingredients that strip the material away. Also, clarifying products are commonly shampoos or similar products that do not add moisture back to the hair and are meant for only occasional use, so there is the risk of it leaving your hair dry if overused. Of course, products can use the terms interchangeably, "muddying up the water" a bit figuratively saying, so hopefully the details below will help you decipher what you need for your hair and what to look for in a product. CLARIFYING INGREDIENTS Clarifying products are typically shampoo-type products. They are designed for the occasional use to strip the hair of excess buildup and are NOT meant for regular use as they are drying. They clarify your hair by using chemical surfactants such as ammonium- or sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate, alpha-olefin sulfonate, chlorides and bromides, and cetyl-fatty alcohols. Sulfa-containing ingredients in particular are usually a very strong surfactant. Think about a super greasy skillet in your sink. You could use a mild detergent, but will it really get that stubborn grease off that skillet? Probably not. That’s when we whip out that Dawn dish soap to get that skillet clean. However, you’re not going to lather up with Dawn every day in the shower unless you want your skin to feel dry and crack over time. This is the same with clarifying shampoos and other products that contain strong surfactants. They have a purpose, but frequent use can be damaging and drying to your hair. No one wants to have a frizzy, dry mane. For obvious reasons, it is very important to condition your hair after using a clarifying shampoo. Additionally, strong surfactants can strip color out of hair, so if you have color treated hair, please make sure the packaging states that it is color safe!! For those with skin conditions, such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis, you might want to check the label first. It is best to use products with salicylic acid that helps with these conditions. It’s not very helpful to clarify your hair, if it just aggravates an existing skin problem by leaving your scalp too dry and triggering it to produce even more oil. DETOX INGREDIENTS One of the biggest differences between clarifying and detox products, besides the moisture issue discussed above, is that detox products also address removing environmental toxins. Our hair is exposed to anything and everything in the air...and it adds up over time. Some ingredients that are commonly seen in detox products include Decyl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, and Centrimonium Chloride. These products are typically milder surfactants that are fairly gentle to the hair and help to reduce frizz and other “symptoms” of dry hair. They can also help reduce skin irritation that can be caused by other stronger surfactants. Some ingredients, such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine can also be used in cosmetics as an emulsifying agency and thickener as well as in conditioners to help reduce static. Additionally, detoxing products can help retain the color in color-treated better and help it last longer. WHAT DETOX PRODUCT SHOULD I USE? Great question! I highly recommend using my Mix-in Detoxifying Cleanser. The high pH of 9, is great to detox and deep cleanse your hair. When it comes to most detox shampoos, they are only able to be used periodically to clean away the excess stuff in your hair, but NoFrizz10 Natural Detox Cleansers can be used regularly by those who have a normal to oily scalp. The longer that you leave it on your hair, the deeper it will detoxify. For a really deep detox leave on for 1-2 hours. Even just 20 minutes does a great job though. If quickly rinsed away rather, it will not be harmful to use and it still smooths rough frizz and brings shine and bounce back to the hair. So, this is a great curly girl approved sulfate free/salt free shampoo for people who go to the gym often or who are on the oily side. If your scalp is normal to dry and you need a more gentle cleanse, than we also offer a pH 5 version that's available. You get to choose your natural scent provided from essential oils too, How fun is that! HERE'S A FEW VIDEOS I HAVE CREATED ABOUT HOW TO DETOX YOUR HAIR Trial 1 of NoFrizz10 Detox Shampoo (Also called a cleanser for body & hair.) A Specific Routine On How I Detox My Hair I used only 2 hand fulls of NoFrizz10 pH 9 Mix-in Detoxifying Cleanser on wet hair, then let it set on just under an hour, and rinsed. Get That NoFrizz10 Squeak! Results of using NoFrizz10 Detox Turn the volume up to hear the "squeak" sound as I pinch and slide my fingers down my hair clean hair. This means NO BUILD-UP! And a huge shoutout to #Straightupcurls on Instagram. I have learned so much from her. She is a great hairstylist and has a very unique approach to healing damaged hair. Great customer service too!! She has a great technique for detoxing hair that her followers love. I suggest using my NoFrizz10 pH 9 Detoxifying Cleanser instead of the Moo Goo Clarifying pH 9 that she uses though. With a couple slight variations to her routine you may find that you need to use much less product to detox! That's a huge plus. She suggests to use over a cup of Moo Goo pH 9 Shampoo! Ouch on the wallet! I was able to get a squeak to my hair on a variation of her routine using only a handful of my NoFrizz10 pH 9 Detoxifying Cleanser set on for less than 1 hour! It's possible that if your hair has more build-up that it will take longer. She suggest using Moo-Goo for 8-9 hours. "Ain't nobody got time for that!" LOL. I was so excited that my hair squeaked so quickly using NoFrizz10 Detox, and so I have shared my routine with you below! Comment below or in our forum to let us know how it works for you. HERE'S MY FULL DETAILED DETOX ROUTINE FOR YOU! This is similar to #Straightupcurls method, except it uses much less product, NoFrizz10 pH9 Mix-in Detoxifying Cleanser, and less time set on. Treatment: 1. Wet hair, apply a couple hand fulls of NoFrizz10 pH 9 Mix-in Detoxifying Cleanser . Rub on and distribute throughout hair. Let set on up to 1 hour. Rinse. 2. Afterwards, use a bond repairing treatment such as k18 khairpep or Olaplex #3...(heals keratins bonds and strengthens with amino acids). Leave on for 15 minutes, don't rinse. 3. After that, put on a protein free deep conditioning mask such as NoFrizz10 SOAK Conditioning Lotion, then leave on overnight. Everything is then rinsed off in the morning. Repeat every 4-8 weeks. *If you color your hair and have a hard time with getting the color to stay then doing the 3 steps treatment as I described above is very helpful the day before coloring. Rinse the morning that you'll be coloring. • Easy Curly Hair Routine - Only 3 Steps

Wash and Style Your Curly Hair with NoFrizz10 Products in Three Easy Steps Maybe you’ve recently started embracing your natural curls and don’t know where to start. Or maybe you’re looking for a simpler routine. There’s conditioners, gels, slip agents, mousses, serums, and the list goes on. Before you know it, you’ve got a bathroom countertop full of products and no idea which to use. What if we simplified it down to just two products? Yes, ONLY 2 PRODUCTS! That’s it! Below, Athena Padilla describes how to use her two favorite NoFrizz10 products in a 3 step simple hair care system. It's such an easy routine. Read our blog or watch in a quick video here. At the end of our blog, look for more on how to style curly hair: tips and techniques. STEP 1: CLEANSE Any beautiful art needs a clean canvas, so the first step is to wash your hair. Whether you are using shampoo, lo-poo, or co-washing, get that gorgeous mane of yours clean. If you aren’t familiar with co-washing, it is using conditioner to clean your hair. It does require some extra scrubbing, but leaves hair feeling silky and moisturized. Athena uses the NoFrizz10 Light Moisture Conditioning Cream to co-wash her hair in her video below. Using a Lo-poo is another great option for normal to dry scalp and it can save you time in your routine because it's basically a conditioner mixed with a shampoo. You might not need any conditioner after a Lo-poo. At NoFrizz10, we have 2 lo-poo's to choose from, either the Moderate Moisture Cream Cleanser or the High Moisture Cream Cleanser. Shampoo should be used for a deep cleanse as needed, so usually once a week or every other week is often enough, but for people with an oily scalp or who work out often, they will want to shampoo more often. Either way, we suggest alternating between the different types of cleansers from time to time such as, one day using a more moisturizing wash, and the next wash day using a shampoo. STEP 2: CUSTOMIZE This is the fun step where you get to moisturize and prep your hair. If you used shampoo or a Lo-poo to cleanse, than all you'll need is a separate conditioner that you can leave on your hair and a Priming Gel. In the video below, Athena uses the same conditioner that she did for co-washing in the customize step by mixing it in her palm with the Essential Slip Priming Serum so her whole routine is only 2 products! For NoFrizz10 Products, you can find them here. You get to choose the moisture level for your hair type. Level 1 is light moisture. Level 2 is moderate moisture. And Level 3 is extreme moisture. If you need help figuring out what moisture level you need, we recommend contacting us on our website. You can mix the two products together as a sort of cocktail in your hand as Athena does in the video below or you can layer the products one after another. Your hair...your preference! However you decide, just be sure to distribute these two products evenly throughout your damp or wet hair and detangle well. STEP 3: SMOOTH No one wants frizz! The trick to omitting frizz is simply, smoothing the hair. It’s essential. While your hair is still damp and after you have thoroughly applied the product throughout your hair, you’ll want to use a Denman brush or a fine tooth comb to smooth your hair out. As you do this, curve your hair up and away from your scalp to help create volume. OPTIONAL STEPS: At the end of this routine, it's a good time to twirl and enhance any curls using Athena's Ribboning Technique! Many people love to scrunch their hair, twirl, and diffuse. This is entirely up to you! Then, using a microfiber towel or a thin cotton t-shirt cloth carefully squeeze out any excess moisture (be aware that terrycloth towels grab hair strands and reintroduce frizz!). It’s that simple!! For sleeping on damp curls be sure to watch Athena's PILLOW PLOP TECHNIQUE! If you would like personalized help, contact Athena to book a personalized consultation. The Data Manager is where you store data to use in your site pages, or collect data from site visitors when they submit a form. This collection in the Data Manager is already set up with some fields and content. To customize it with your own content, you can import a CSV file or simply edit the placeholder text. You can also add more fields which you can connect to other page elements so the content displays on your published site. Remember to sync the collection so your content is live! You can add as many new collections as you need to store or collect data. With Presets, we’ve handled the page set up for you, but you can create the exact same functionality in your other site pages. To connect page elements to data, the first step is to add a dataset to the page and choose the collection you want to use. From the dataset Settings panel, you can filter or sort the available items, decide how your users can interact with the page (read/write), and more. Next, select the element you want to connect to the data, and choose the field you want to connect it to. So simple! If you want to add even more capabilities, enable Developer Tools to use JavaScript and APIs to add custom interactions and functionality to your site.
